SAN RAMON, Calif. - Defenses have held tough through the early going, with six California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) teams allowing less than one goal per game so far. Another round of defensive tests will occur this week as CCAA play begins.

Three CCAA squads own undefeated records in non-conference play. Stanislaus State is 5-0 overall heading into a pair of road matches. At 4-0, Sonoma State has one final non-conference tuneup Monday before starting CCAA action on Friday. The third undefeated team, Humboldt State, owns a 3-0 mark with two-consecutive shutouts.

Game of the Week
Sunday’s match in La Jolla is the CCAA Game of the Week as it features a pair of regular tournament contenders in UC San Diego and Stanislaus State. The defending champion Tritons have fallen to 3-2 after a pair of losses in Colorado last week. Meanwhile, the Warriors have started the year with five-straight wins, including a pair of hard-fought road victories over GNAC challengers this past week.

Stanislaus State’s offense includes the CCAA points leader, Jade Poon, who has 13 points with six goals and an assist. The 2016 Offensive Player of the Year, Katie O’Laughlin, owns three goals and an assist so far this season for UCSD. In the most recent meeting between the Tritons and Warriors, UCSD captured a 1-0 victory in the semifinal round of the 2016 CCAA Championship Tournament.

Around the League
Chico State is also carrying plenty of momentum into the start of CCAA play. The Wildcats have won three-consecutive matches to improve to 3-1 overall. On Friday, Chico State will travel to take on UCSD in La Jolla under the lights for a 7 p.m. kickoff. The Wildcats’ Erin Woods is No. 2 on the CCAA points leaderboard with 12.

Cal Poly Pomona started off the year 3-0 before suffering its first loss on Saturday, a 2-1 result against California Baptist. The Broncos host Seattle Pacific Tuesday before beginning conference play against Cal State Dominguez Hills (0-3) and Cal State LA (2-1). The Golden Eagles have received two game-winning goals this season from Paulina Chaidez.

Defenses Dialed In
Three defenses have allowed fewer than three goals so far this year. Sonoma State has given up two goals in four games, Cal Poly Pomona has allowed two goals in five games and Humboldt State has been scored on just once in its three contests. Leading the way in save percentage for goalkeepers? That’s the Jacks’ Katelin Talbert with a .938 mark.
