CCAA to Use Points Per Match for 2017 Soccer Standings
SAN RAMON, Calif. – Due to the wildfires that have plagued Northern California and forced cancellation of soccer matches earlier this month, the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) will revise its procedure for men’s and women’s soccer standings and seedings for the 2017 season.
Rather than its standard procedure of utilizing total points for soccer standings and seedings, administrators from the league and its respective sport committees will instead utilize an average points per match calculation to determine team placement in the conference standings.
The Game Management Committee recommended and the ADs approved the decision not to reschedule the San Diego and San Marcos at Sonoma State matches that could not be played because of the wildfires.
"There simply are no reasonable dates available to put them on,” said CCAA Commissioner Nate Salant. “The committee looked at the remaining playing weeks and was unanimous in that conclusion, as were the ADs in support of that result.”
The Game Management Committee studied the impact of the unplayed matches on the schedule and reviewed two options for calculating the standings: winning percentage or average points earned per match played. There was discussion about each option and in the end, the points/match was the near unanimous choice.
“It was pointed out that in baseball and softball, the weather usually prevents us from completing the entire schedule, so winning percentage is used because that is how standings are compiled in those sports,” Salant explained. “In soccer, the tradition is points, partially because there is no absolute way to value a tie in a winning percentage setting, so the group was nearly unanimous in its decision to go with average points per match played.
"The ADs endorsed the proposal near-unanimously, and the standings are being changed to reflect this decision, which will be treated as a one-time, non-precedent-setting solution. The soccer coaches will be asked to review this at their annual meeting, and we will leave it to them to propose a rule change to the Executive Council should they wish to do so."
With the new calculations the current men’s and women’s soccer standings are as follows:
