Wildcats' Shelby Lanksbury and Toros Joey Chica Selected CCAA Soccer Players of the Week

SAN RAMON – Chico State senior Shelby Lanksbury and Cal State Dominguez Hills senior Joey Chica tabbed the California Collegiate Athletic Association Women's and Men's Soccer Player of the Week, respectively, for the week of Sept. 5-11.


Women's Soccer Player of the Week

Lanksburg, a Yorba Linda product, notched two game-winning goals and an assist to lead the 24th-ranked Wildcats to a 3-0 week, including wins over Seattle Pacific, Holy Names and Academy of Art. 

On Wednesday, in an important West Region showdown featuring two of the region's top-five ranked teams, Lanksbury sent a laser to the back of the net in the 86th minute to lift the Wildcats to a 1-0 victory. 

In Friday's 2-0 win against Holy Names Lanksury's teammate Breilynn Tovani set things up with a ball into space that put Lanksbury in 1-on-1 with the Hawk's keeper. The junior forwards first attempt, a chip from the top of the box was swat it into the air, but Lanksbury continued to attack as she volleyed the ball home just inside the right post at 23:06.

Lanksbury wrapped stellar offensive week, helping the Wildcats to their third-straight shutout victory. In Sunday's 5-0 win against Academy of Art, she registered an assist on her teammate Carlie Reader's goal that made gave Chico State a 2-0 lead in the 17th minute of regulation. 

On the weekend, was eight for 14 in shots on goal and totaled five points.

Men's Soccer Player of the Week

Chica, a senior from Visalia, scored two goals that helped lift the Toros to a 2-1 win over previously undefeated Northwest Nazarene and provided an insurance goal in their 2-0 victory against Hawaii Hilo. 

Thursday against the Crusaders, after allowing a goal just eight minutes into the game, Chica connected for the equalizer at 77:09 and the game winner at 83:30. He finished five-for-seven in shots on goal.

In Saturday's shutout victory, the forward secured the victory after making a long run up the middle of the field and chipping it past the Vulcans keeper with just 34 seconds remaining in regulation.

Chica placed eight of 12 shots between the posts and scored three times for six total points on the weekend.
