Toros, Tritons, and Pioneers Share 2015-16 CCAA Regular-Season Title
SAN RAMON – After a season-long battle Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State East Bay, and UC San Diego women's basketball teams finish regular-season play with an identical 18-2 record en route to earning a share of the 2015-16 Calfornia Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Regular-Season Title.
History has repeated itself for the Toros and Tritons, earning regular-season titles in 2014-15 and 2011-12, respectively. For Cal State East Bay a share of the 2015-16 title marks the first Championship title for the Pioneers in any sport since rejoining NCAA DII and entering the CCAA in 2008-09.
In addition to announcing the three champs, the Conference has also determined the field for next week's CCAA post-season tournament. Joining the Toros, Pioneers and Tritons as one of the eight teams to clinch a post-season berth are Stanislaus State, Cal State San Bernardino, Humboldt State, Cal Poly Pomona, and Cal State LA.
This year's tournament field returns to eight women's teams with first-round games to be played at the top four seeds' campus arenas on Tuesday, March 1. The four teams to come out of the first-round games will advance to Stockton Arena, the site of the semifinal and final rounds, which are scheduled for March 4-5.
For the second-consecutive season, Cal State Dominguez Hills will play as the No. 1 seed after breaking the three way tie with its 2-1 combined record against Cal State East Bay and UC San Diego. UC San Diego will play as the No. 2 seed thanks to its win over Cal State East Bay in the two teams only meeting this season. Cal State East Bay is the No. 3 seed. Stanislaus State (12-8), which has earned its highest post-season seed in program history and its first home post-season game since 1991 will play as the No. 4 seed.
After splitting its head to head regular-season contests, Cal State San Bernardino (10-10) edged Humboldt State (10-10) for the No. 5 seed. The Coyotes snagged a win over Cal State East Bay while the Lumberjacks finished winless against the Toros, Tritons and Pioneers this season.
The No. 5 Coyotes will travel to Turlock to take on the Warriors, while the No. 6 Lumberjacks take on the Pioneers. No. 7 seeded Cal Poly Pomona (9-11) and No. 8 Cal State LA (8-12) are headed to La Jolla and Carson for first round matchups against UC San Diego and Cal State Dominguez Hills, respectively.
