CCAA Announces 2016 Women's Soccer Postseason Tournament Field
SAN RAMON – The 13 California Collegiate Athletic Association women's soccer programs closed out 2016 regular-season play Saturday afternoon.
The six programs heading to the Conference's 2016 postseason tournament are: UC San Diego, Sonoma State, Cal State San Bernardino, Cal Poly Pomona, Stanislaus State, and Cal State LA.
Eighth-ranked UC San Diego (12-0-0) captured the CCAA Regular-Season Title and a first-round bye prior to its final match of the season. The defending CCAA Tournament Champion Tritons secured its Conference-best ninth championship banner with a 1-0 win over Cal State San Bernardino Thursday before rallying to a 2-1 win over Cal Poly Pomona Saturday to complete league season with a perfect record. It marks the conference's first perfect slate since Sonoma State went 14-0 in 1998, and is the first one in the storied program's history since joining the CCAA in 2000. UCSD had in fact never even gone unbeaten in a CCAA season.
Sonoma State (10-1-1) also earned a first-round bye, for a second-straight season, and will play as the No. 2 seed at this year's postseason event.
The Tritons and Seawolves received automatic bids to the semifinal round of the 2016 Tournament, which is set for November 4 at Warrior Stadium in Turlock. The women's soccer championship game is set for Sunday, November 6, with the winner earning the Conference's automatic bid to the 2016 NCAA West Region Tournament.
Two first-round contests will be held Tuesday, November 1st. No. 3 seeded Cal State San Bernardino (7-3-2) will host Southern California foe, No. 6 seeded Cal State LA (5-6-1) at Jesse Owens Track, while No. 4 seeded Cal Poly Pomona (6-4-2) will welcome No. 5 seeded Stanislaus State (6-6-0) at Kellogg Field for the second time this season.
The Broncos edged the Warriors 2-1 in Pomona earlier this season. The Golden Eagles face the Coyotes for the second time in less than two weeks, dropping their first meeting 1-0 in Los Angeles.
