WALNUT CREEK, Calif. —The 2012 Major League Baseball First-Year Player draft concluded on Wednesday with ten California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) players being selected.
The total was the same that was drafted in both the 2009 and 2010 drafts. Last year, 15 CCAA players were selected in the First-Year Player draft.
Cal State San Bernardino led the way as the Coyotes had four players selected including catcher Paul Eshleman in the 23rd round.
Matthew Young-- Young transferred to Cal State Dominguez Hills after two years at Compton College. After the completion of his second year at the junior college level, he was drafted by Tampa Bay Devil Rays organization in the 14th round of the 2011 MLB Draft. During the 2012 season he was amongst the best in the CCAA, leading the NCAA West Region with 28 stolen bases and ranking in the top three among the CCAA in stolen bases, homeruns, and slugging percentage. He was named to three West Region teams (two 1st-team, one 2nd-team) and to the 1st-team All-CCAA squad, as well as being named the CCAA Co-Newcomer of the Year. The Moreno Valley native is a communications major
Paul Eschleman-- The Yucaipa native hit .310 for the Coyotes and earned All-CCAA and West Region honors. He also was honored by West Region coaches with the ABCA/West Region Gold Glove.
Geoff Broussard--Through his senior campaign in 2012, Broussard maintained an earned run average of 1.58 through 2012 while collecting 82 strikeouts in 97 innings thrown. A two-time California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Pitcher of the Week this year, Broussard recorded seven complete games and two shutouts in his 12 starts. In Friday's All-America announcement, he proved to be the only CCAA player to be featured among the First Team selections.
Daniel Duran--Duran had a record-breaking senior season for the Golden Eagles and earned second-team All-America honors. He was also the NCAA Division II West Region Player of the Year by all three organizations who select teams. Duran was also the CCAA Player of the Year. He set a new program record by hitting .451. The hot-hitting third baseman led the team with nine home runs and 44 RBI and he led the conference in hitting (.451), slugging percentage (.737), on-base percentage (.533), hits (79), runs scored (47), doubles (23) and walks (33). Duran hit .468 in conference games and had a slugging percentage of .773 and an on-base percentage of .541.
Michael Turay-- Turay made 44 starts and batted .262 with 18 extra-base hits, including 11 doubles, after he transferred from University of Nevada. He played mostly in the outfield for head coach Kenny Leonesio.
Casey McCarthy-- The Valencia native stepped into the ace position for the Coyotes and finished with a 5-5 record and 3.84 ERA. He threw 93.2 innings -- seventh best in school history -- with 58 strikeouts and two complete games
Ethan Chapman-- The Upland junior set a school record for triples in a season (six) and career (12). He hit .330 and earned All-CCAA and West Region honors and joined Eshleman as a West Region Gold Glove recipient with a 1.000 fielding percentage at his center field position.
Michael Mudron-- Mudron made the most of his one season with the Coyotes as he was selected by the Washington Nationals in Round 32. The Riverside left-hander was 6-1 with a 2.90 ERA in 59 innings. He allowed the opposition to hit just .219 and did not allow a home run.
Joshua Nervis--The 6-foot-3 senior out of Oakland went 7-5 with a 4.73 earned run average and 94 strikeouts in 25 career appearances in the Seawolf uniform. This past season, Nervis went 3-4 on the mound, sporting a 4.39 ERA and fanning 70 batters, the sixth-most strikeouts in the CCAA in 2012. On Mar. 23 against Cal Poly Pomona, he struckout a career-high 12 batters and allowed just four hits and two runs (one earned) in six innings of work, but had to settle for the no decision.
Chad Nacapay-- Nacapoy got off to a sizzling start for the Golden Eagles in 2012, but an early-season hand injury knocked him out of action for a month. The catcher returned and helped the Golden Eagles mount a late-season charge for the playoffs that fell just short. Nacapoy hit .361 with 22 hits in 20 starts. He had two home runs and eight RBI. He earned second-team All-CCAA honors in 2011 after hitting .264 with eight home runs and 23 RBI. Nacapoy joined Cal State L.A. after appearing in 38 games over two seasons at BYU.
