UC San Diego Women, Chico State Men Lead CCAA Track & Field Championships

CHICO, Calif. - Following Friday's first full day of competition, the UC San Diego women and Chico State men are the team leaders at the 2009 CCAA Track and Field Championships that are being held at University Stadium in Chico.

The Triton women currently hold a five-point lead over second-place Chico State (57). Cal State L.A. (43), Cal Poly Pomona (10) and San Francisco State (9) round out the top five in the eight-team field.

On the men's side, Chico State (45) is nine points ahead of Cal State Stanislaus (36). Humboldt State (35), is third, Cal Poly Pomona and UC San Diego (33) are tied for fourth and Cal State L.A. (13) is sixth.

Junior All-American, defending CCAA Champion and national champion Linda Rainwater got the Tritons off to a good start as she captured the heptathlon after recording 5,102 points to finish ahead of teammate Stephanie LeFever (5,004), Cal State L.A.'s Shianne Smith (4,868) and Chico State's Kelly Clancey (4,811).

All four athletes posted automatic NCAA Championships qualifying marks.

Other highlights on the women's side included Chico State's Tori Tyler winning the 10,000 meter (36:06.69), Cal State L.A.'s Denina Speights capturing the long jump (18-07.25), and UC San Diego's Sarah Hendy and Danielle Thu claiming the discuss (147.11) and hammer throw (180.06), respectively.

Jersain Torres of Cal Poly Pomona won the 10,000 meters in a time of 31.53.49. Cal State L.A.'s Josh Linker won the decathlon with 6,782 points.

Other finals winner included Cal Poly Pomona's Jonathan Williams winning the long jump (23-06.25), Humboldt State's Thomas Wilhelm taking the discuss (153-09) and Cal State Stanislaus' Cuauhtemoc Vallejo-Howar besting the field in the hammer throw (174-02).

The CCAA Track and Field Championships conclude on Saturday with competition set to begin at 8:30 a.m.
