San Diego defeats WWU, wins DisneyÕs Tip-off Classic
ANAHEIM Ñ UC San Diego
used an 11-0 run in the final five minutes of the contest to defeat Western
Washington, 55-45, in the final game of the womenÕs division of the inaugural
DisneyÕs West Coast Tip-off Classic.
With the win, the
Tritons finished 3-0 on the weekend to win the tournament championship.
The eight-team
tournament is presented by DisneyÕs Wide World of Sports and the Disneyland
Resort. The three-day menÕs and womenÕs basketball tournament is being held at
the Anaheim Convention Center Arena.
After leading for most
of the game, including a 10-point advantage halfway through the second half,
UCSD saw Western Washington make a comeback. The Vikings went on 12-1 run to
take a 43-42 lead on a Krystal Robinson jumper with 7:25 to play.
UCSD, the defending
West Region champion, took control late and got good play from Michelle Osier
down the stretch to seal the win. Osier, who made her first basket late in the
game, had five points, five rebounds and a steal in the final five minutes to
help the Tritons.
Osier finished with 10
rebounds and her teammates Alexis Gaskin, Alexis Mezzetta and Meaghan Noud all
chipped in nine points.
Western Washington
(1-2) was led by Amanda Dubar with 12 points. Claire Pallansch had seven points
and 10 rebounds while Robinson added nine points.
