Western
Washington holds off Colorado Christian
ANAHEIM Ñ Late free
throws and key baskets by Western Washington allowed the Vikings to hold off a
surging Colorado Christian team as WWU won game four, 72-63, of the womenÕs
division of the inaugural DisneyÕs West Coast Tip-off Classic.
The eight-team
tournament is presented by DisneyÕs Wide World of Sports and the Disneyland
Resort. The three-day menÕs and womenÕs basketball tournament is being held at
the Anaheim Convention Center Arena.
The WWU win sets up a
showdown in SundayÕs womenÕs bracket when the Vikings take on UC San Diego at
1:30 p.m.
Krystal Robinson led
the Vikings with 20 points on 8 of 16 shooting. She also grabbed 10 rebounds.
Clarie Pallansch added 14 points and 10 rebounds and Amanda Dunbar added 13
points for the Vikings (1-1).
Talmai Aguirre led the
CCU Cougars with 20 points, four assists and three steals. Abby Rosenthal had
10 points.
After trailing all
game and by as many as 10 points several times in the second half, Colorado
Christian put on a late run and actually took a lead at 6:56 on a Ashley
Braasch three-pointer.
CCUÕs Sara Davis then
added a second triple seconds later for a four-point Cougar lead. After a
see-saw battle for the next three minutes, Western Washington went on a run for
the win.
WWU converted on eight free throws in the final 36 seconds of the game to seal the victory.
