UC
San Diego goes 2-0 in Classic with win over Augustana
ANAHEIM Ñ On paper, it
was a match-up of two titans in the tournament, but it didnÕt turn out that way
as UC San Diego controlled the game and beat Augustana College, 69-51, in game
three of the womenÕs division of the inaugural DisneyÕs West Coast Tip-off
Classic.
The eight-team
tournament is presented by DisneyÕs Wide World of Sports and the Disneyland
Resort. The three-day menÕs and womenÕs basketball tournament is being held at
the Anaheim Convention Center Arena.
Meaghan Noud led the
Tritons in scoring for the second straight game with 15 points on Saturday.
Alexis Gaskin and Laura Moore each added 10 points. Michelle Osier contributed nine
points and nine rebounds.
AugustanaÕs Amy Puthoff
again was prolific offensively for the Vikings as she netted 24 points on
8-for-12 shooting. She also had seven rebounds. Puthoff scored 15 on Friday.
Her teammate Whitney Hofer had 13 points and Ashley Holiday grabbed 11
rebounds.
UC San Diego (2-0) led
throughout the game and had a 24-point advantage with 9:50 left to go in the
second half at 57-33. The Tritons forced 23 turnovers against Augustana (1-), a
night after creating 35 on Friday versus Western Washington.
Both UC San Diego and
Augustana were NCAA tournament teams last year with UCSD advancing to the
national semifinals with a school-record 27 wins. Augustana turned in a 25-6
record including a 20-game winning streak.
