San Diego tips-off with 69-58 win over Colorado Christian
ANAHEIM Ñ UC San DiegoÕs
post-Leora Juster era began Friday with similar results as the Tritons defeated
Colorado Christian, 69-58, in game two of the womenÕs division of the inaugural
DisneyÕs West Coast Tip-off Classic.
The eight-team
tournament is presented by DisneyÕs Wide World of Sports and the Disneyland
Resort. The three-day menÕs and womenÕs basketball tournament is being held at
the Anaheim Convention Center Arena.
Michelle Osier had 15
points and eight rebounds and Meaghan Noud scored 16 and pulled six boards to
lead UCSD (1-0). Alexis Gaskin, who had eight first half points, finished with
16 points and six rebounds.
Talami Aguiree led the
Cougars of Colorado Christian with 18 point. She also added six rebounds to go
with her 7-for-14 shooting night. Abby Rosenthal chipped in 11 points for CCU.
UCSD, the defeating West
Region champion, started a new era without All-American and two-time regional
most valuable player Juster and with a new head coach in Charity Elliot.
Colorado Christian took
an early lead and led by as many as nine points, 20-11, with 8:29 to go in the
first half after two Abby Rosenthal free throws. Sara Davis added eight points
and seven rebounds.
UC San Diego, however,
made a run after a Laura Moore three-pointer and actually took a 27-25 lead
four minutes later after a Meaghan Noud trey at 4:25.
After CCU tied it at
27-27, the Tritons used a 9-0 run to close out the first half with a 36-27
advantage.
The womenÕs division of
the tournament continues on Saturday with a 5 p.m. contest between Augustana
College and Colorado Christian. The nightcap game features UC San Diego and
Western Washington at 7:30 p.m.
