Augustana
opens Tip-off Classic with 83-58 win over Western Washington
ANAHEIM Ð After just
two weeks of practice, Augustana College appeared in mid-season form as the
Vikings easily disposed of Western Washington, 83-58, in the opening womenÕs
game of the inaugural DisneyÕs West Coast Tip-off Classic.
The eight-team
tournament is presented by DisneyÕs Wide World of Sports and the Disneyland
Resort. The three-day menÕs and womenÕs basketball tournament is being held at
the Anaheim Convention Center Arena.
Five different
Augustana players scored in double-figures with Amy Puthoff and Ashley Holiday
each with 15 points. Molly Hayes added 13 and Whitney Hofer and Liz Helsper
each chipped in 12. Hofer led with six rebounds.
Augustana (1-0) was
efficient from the field, shooting nearly 51 percent and made 11 of 22
three-pointers.
The Augustana College
Vikings of Sioux Falls, S.D. is coming off a 25-6 campaign in 2006-07 which
included a 20-game winning streak. AC, a member of the North Central
Conference, is led by head coach David Krauth.
For Western Washington
(0-1), a representative from the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, was led
by Amanda Dubar with 18 points. Kristin Schramm and Marelle Moehrie each had
eight.
Augustana used a 18-3
run during a 2 1/2 minute span late in the second half to open up a 27-point
67-40 lead.
Puthoff had a great
first half, going 5-for-9 with a pair of three-pointers for 12 points. Her
fast-break layup at 1:43 gave Augustana a 16-point, 33-17, lead Ñ AugustanaÕs
largest in the first half. AC led at the half 35-22.
