Ortiz scores 23 as Coyotes run past MSU Billings

 

ANAHEIM Ñ Cal State San Bernardino welcomed Montana State-Billings to the West Region in dominating fashion as the Coyotes ran past MSUB, 84-52, to open day two of Disney's Division II West Coast Tip-Off Classic.  

 

The eight-team tournament is presented by DisneyÕs Wide World of Sports and the Disneyland Resort. The three-day menÕs and womenÕs basketball tournament is being held at the Anaheim Convention Center Arena.

 

Lance Ortiz was 9 for 11 shooting to finish with a game-high 23 points. He nailed 5 of 7 three-point attempts and also pulled five rebounds. Marlon Pierce chipped in nine points with seven assists.

 

Despite losing four starters from last yearÕs team that advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Championship tournament. Cal State San Bernardino had little trouble playing its style of game with a high-power offense and pressure defense.

 

The Coyotes (2-0), led by as many as 38 points at 76-38 halfway through the second half.

 

MSUB was led by Aaron Terry with 12 points and four assists.

 

Montana State-Billings (0-2) made its return to the West Region after spending the last two years in the Heartland Conference of the Southwest Region. MSUB was a member of the Pacific West Conference as late as the 2004-05 season.
